Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
