Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
