TV is bad for your health

TV is bad for your health

We all know that the health of our nation is a huge cause for concern. It’s not just the quality of life for individuals and their children but also the spiralling cost of healthcare that will affect the nation as a whole.

As the government looks at ways to improve our future they are faced with the fact that in Britain, one child in four is overweight when they start school and one in three is too fat by the time they leave primary school, according to official figures.

A recent study at the University of Sydney’s NSW Centre for Overweight and Obesity, looked at the effects that a sedentary lifestyle is having on our children. Among the findings were that girls aged 13 and 15 who spent more than four hours a day in front of a TV or computer screen were 50 per cent less fit than their peers who spent a maximum of two hours. The school students were put though a “beep test” that required them to run between two points over decreasing periods of time.
This is a lesson for us all.

We need to exchange TV time for active time if we are to reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle in years to come.
