No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
