Today’s kids spend more than five hours a day in front of a screen… the TV, Laptop, Mobile Phone or the latest new must-have in digital gaming technology. This means that the time they spend being physically active is becoming more and more limited.
Obesity amongst children is on the rise, partly a result of the sedentary lifestyles many now lead whilst preferring to while away their hours on the XBox as opposed to in the great outdoors. Studies report that obesity amongst children aged 6 to 11 has more than doubled in the past 20 years, and today, 20% of kids are considered overweight.
Not only are overweight kids prone to taunts and bullying in the playground, they’re also at a higher risk of developing health issues as they grow older. Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and high cholesterol are common concerns for overweight and inactive children later in life. Add to this that active kids sleep better, eat better, have stronger bones, and tend to feel generally better about themselves, how are so many kids still finding themselves in the BMI danger zone?
Whilst many kids are active, if they don’t see their parents making fitness a priority, they’ll assume it isn’t one. What’s important to adults naturally becomes important to kids, so it’s up to parents, teachers and trainers to act as the role models they need to get them thinking in a different way.
As a Kids Fitness Instructor, you’ll be fully equipped with the tools needed to coach and motivate children of all ages from 5-16 years. You’ll acquire the skills and knowledge needed to plan, teach and evaluate a range of activities for children whilst gaining a full understanding of the challenges you’ll no doubt face teaching groups of young people unsupervised.
This course is highly recommended for health and fitness professionals who’d like to work within child-friendly leisure centres, after school clubs or non-teaching assistants who want to help promote fitness to children.
