Fitness Trends For 2018

As we wave goodbye to 2017, we’ve witnessed the emergence of a number of new fitness trends. From new fitness technology, to workplace workouts and new doors opening for fitness professionals, it’s been a great year for those getting started on a new fitness career.

As we look forward to 2018, the ACSM’s annual survey of health and fitness trends around the world has been released, continuing to list some of this years’ fitness trends as ones to watch for the year ahead.

So what will we be focusing on for fitness in 2018?

Functional Fitness

Using strength training, we are improving balance, coordination, force, power, and endurance to enhance our ability to perform daily activities. Functional fitness is popular amongst those with hectic schedules and little time to head to the gym, plus older adults who appear to be increasingly focused on fitness. Exercise and Weight Loss

Exercising to tackle obesity and maintain a healthy weight range has remained a top 20 trend since the survey began. Exercise and weight loss go hand in hand when monitored and co-ordinated by qualified fitness professionals. Seeing as the obesity crisis continues to rage on, encouraging physical activity to target the issue remains crucial for professionals in our field.

Personal Training

Since the ACSM’s first survey back in 2006, personal training has continued to feature in the top 10. We can see why… working with a qualified fitness professional is crucial to understanding your body, your capabilities, and your fitness goals.

Certification Is A Must

On the flip-side, clients are now becoming much more savvy before parting with their trust, and their cash. They do their research, ask questions regarding experience, qualifications and often request references.  So for those considering becoming a personal trainer, a professional certification is a must if you want to make it in the world of fitness

Yoga

Fun, low energy and a great choice for people of all ages and ability, yoga continues to keep a top ten spot. With benefits including increased flexibility, muscle strength and protection from injury, this versatile workout provides plenty of choice for those looking to shake up their regime.

Exercise Is Medicine

Exercise is Medicine is a global health initiative, designed to encourage GP’s and other health care providers to include physical activity when creating treatment plans for patients. (Take a look)

GP’s can offer advice surrounding healthy diets and weight management, though many feel that they don’t have the high quality training, or the incentive to promote exercise as a solution. Giving them the additional training and awareness they need, will help GP’s to give much more attention to exercise referral and strengthen their working partnerships with specialist fitness practitioners.

Group Training

Group exercise not only helps to improve motivation, but can also enable us to perform better, whilst keeping up with fitness companions. There’s a whole world of group fitness options out there, from gym-based classes to more extreme outdoor sports. 2018 will see a rise in group exercise thanks to its sociable nature and motivational new styles.

Strength Training

Strength training remains popular in all areas of the health and fitness sector. Those qualified to coach strength and conditioning go on to work with athletes and amateur sports professionals looking to increase their performance. A great career option for those with a passion for pushing limits.

HIIT

HIIT combines short bursts of high-intensity exercise with short periods of rest, for maximum results in minimal time. Popular in groups, alone, in the gym or in the great outdoors, HIIT continues to be popular amongst those that need to get their workout done, with little time to do so.

Body Weight Training

Body weight training always ranks highly on the fitness trends hot-list. It can be done any time, anywhere and without the need for fitness equipment. A winner all round!

Wearable Technology

Though science says there’s little evidence fitness trackers are effective, the professionals involved in the ACSM’s survey say wearable tech is still big business. This year, we’ve seen activity trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices. Stand by for the next wave, including smart glasses, smart fabrics, and interactive textiles which are expected to take 2018 by storm.
