Fall Classic Final Game Attracts 51 Million Viewers In the US, Canada and Japan Markets.

The nail-biting 11-inning contest that saw the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 drew a total 51M spectators across the United States, Canadian, and Japan territories. Major League Baseball stated this is the most-watched Fall Classic finale after the 1991 edition contest between the Minnesota Twins and Atlanta Braves.

Television Ratings Details

Last Saturday’s epic game averaged over 27 million audience members on Fox networks, its Spanish-language channel and Fox’s digital services. According to Nielsen, it was the second most-watched program of the week.

It additionally stands as the top-rated Fall Classic game after the 2017 final game between the Dodgers and Astros, which drew 29.07M. This represents a sixteen percent increase over the last finale featuring the Nationals and Houston Astros, which drew 23.19M.

In the Nielsen ratings, the sixth game ranked fourth, Game 4 was 7th, the fifth game was eighth, and the third game landed in 13th position.

International Viewership Numbers

In the Canadian market, the climactic game recorded over 11 million viewers on Sportsnet and the French TVA Sports. This was the highest-rated English broadcast in the country since the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

In the Japanese market, where the final contest began at 9 PM in the local time zone, it averaged 12 million. This followed last Friday’s Game 6 – in which World Series Most Valuable Player Yamamoto allowed a single run in six frames – recorded 13.1 million spectators, making it the most-watched World Series matchup on a sole broadcaster in Japan.

Series Averages and Trends

The full seven-game series recorded 15.71 million audience members on the Fox network, a two percent rise from the previous year’s Dodgers-Yankees series. This marks the first time after 2015 and ‘16 that the Fall Classic has recorded audience increases for two straight years.

Counting the Game 1 broadcast on Univision, the total US viewership reached 16.1M. The overall Fall Classic viewership in the Japanese market was 9.7 million and 8.1M in the Canadian market.

The complete playoffs on Fox, FS1 and FS2 averaged 8.09 million watchers, an eight percent increase over last year and the network’s strongest playoff ratings after the 2017 season.

Major League Baseball reported that the World Series was televised in 203 nations and regions by forty-four broadcasting partners in sixteen various languages.
