Specialist Personal Training Course

The Specialist Personal Trainer course is for people looking to work as a Personal Trainer, whilst also pursuing a career working with specific population groups, such as Older Adults, Pre and Post Natal clients and clients with specific conditions.

This is a multi-faceted course that not only focuses on the core areas of personal training, but into the rapidly expanding area of exercise referrals. This requires you to design and manage programmes for clients, often with multiple medical conditions, who are referred as part of their treatment.

Having the skills and knowledge with this increasing customer base will give you a major advantage when competing for jobs in this area.

Course Structure and Content

  • What course materials will I receive when I enrol on the Specialist Personal Trainer course?

    You will have access to individual manuals for Personal Training, Nutrition, Exercise Referral and Older Adult or Ante/ Post Natal.

    Once enrolled, we will give you access to our online learning platform, which includes interactive revision tools and quizzes to test your knowledge. You can also complete elements of the home study work from here.

  • What will I learn during the Specialist Personal Trainer Diploma course?

    The Specialist Personal Trainer course is split into three main modules:

    • Personal Trainer
    • Exercise Referral Specialist
    • Ante/Post Natal Instructor OR Older Adult Instructor

    Personal Trainer

    • Advanced anatomy and physiology
    • Advanced cardiovascular training methods
    • Advanced resistance training methods
    • Movement screening – postural assessment and overhead squat assessment
    • SMART Goal setting
    • Progressive exercise programming
    • Teaching exercise outdoors
    • Olympic lifting techniques
    • Plyometric and motor skill development
    • Functional core stability training
    • PNF stretching (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation)
    • Nutritional basis of healthy eating
    • Analysis of food labels
    • Eating for energy
    • Analysis of food diaries
    • Passive fitness assessments including blood pressure testing, skin fold measuring, postural analysis
    • Active fitness assessments including movement screening, VO2 Max assessments, muscular strength and endurance assessments

    Exercise Referral

    Principles of exercise referral with specific controlled conditions including:

    • Cardiovascular: Atherosclerosis, Hypertension, High cholesterol
    • Mobility: Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoporosis, Low back pain, Lordosis, Kyphosis, Scoliosis, Spondylosis (spinal arthritis)
    • Other: Obesity, Diabetes 1 & 2, hip and knee replacement, stress, anxiety and depression, Asthma, Bronchitis and Emphysema
    • Related exercise benefits and implications
    • Medications (over counter and prescription) and exercise implications
    • Plan, design and adapt progressive programmes for specific controlled conditions, to include:
    • Lifestyle, health and government policy
    • Behaviour change and motivational interviewing
    • Progressive programming
    • Setting up and coordinating exercise referral schemes
    • Instruct and evaluate exercise activity for specific controlled conditions, to include:
    • Referrals to exercise
    • Session structure and content
    • Evaluating the instructing process

    Ante/ Post Natal

    • The anatomy of pregnancy
    • The ante natal period
    • The post natal period
    • Structure and content of ante and post natal exercise sessions
    • Planning, teaching and evaluation of skills

    Older Adult

    • Theory of anatomical and physiological changes associated with the ageing process
    • Age related disease
    • Disease management
    • Medical conditions affecting bones, joints and muscles
    • Cardiovascular system and nervous system
    • Higher level teaching skills
  • How is the Specialist Personal Trainer course delivered?

    Once you have booked your course, one of our expert and dedicated tutors, will be in touch to plan your learning and support you through coursework feedback and revision sessions over the phone, ensuring adequate time and preparation for your practical course days. You will attend 4 separate weekend workshops, 10 days in total and one assessment day.

    Whether you choose Ante and Post Natal or Older Adult as your optional module, these courses are delivered by distance learning with support from your tutor over the phone. Dates will be agreed for coursework deadlines and telephone appointments will be made to allow tutors to give you regular feedback on the work that you submit.

    Course attendance will be at your choice of Focus Training centres throughout the UK.

  • How do I submit my work for the Specialist Personal Trainer course?

    You need to submit your home-study units either online through interactive questioning or you could choose to complete it hand written if you prefer.

  • How will I be assessed on the Specialist Personal Trainer course?

    Dependent on the modules you select, the course agenda will differ, however, you can expect to complete the following:

  • How do I become a Specialist Personal Trainer?

    Entry onto the Specialist Personal Trainer course requires you to hold a recognised Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification, if you do not already have this, we can add it onto your course. Once Level 2 Gym qualified you are ready to enrol onto the Specialist Personal Trainer course and take your first steps into a very exciting and rewarding career!

  • What can I expect to achieve from the Specialist Personal Trainer Diploma?

    Upon completing the Specialist Personal Trainer Diploma, you will receive:

    Focus Training Specialist Personal Training Diploma certificate
    Active IQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training
    CYQ Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral
    CYQ Level 3 Award in Adapting Exercise for Independently Active, Older People or CYQ Level 3 Award in Adapting Exercise for Ante Natal and Post Natal Clients

  • Do REPs recognise the Specialist Personal Trainer course?

    Yes! All Focus Training qualifications are recognised by REPs, and this one will award you with 20 REPs points and entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals as a Level 3 Personal Trainer and Exercise Referral specialist.

  • Is funding available for the Specialist Personal Trainer course?

    Yes, the Diploma qualifies for 19+ Learner Loans. If you are eligible you will only have to pay a fully refundable small deposit, which you get back when you complete the course.

  • How else can I pay for the Specialist Personal Trainer course?

    We offer interest-free payment and also have a flexible finance options if you want to reduce your monthly outgoings by paying over a longer period. If you prefer to pay up front you’ll receive a pay in full discount.

  • How long will it take me to complete the Specialist Personal Trainer course?

    Part-time learning option: From start to finish it is possible to complete this qualification in a minimum of 6 months depending on time that you have available to study and your previous experience. Most learners take between 6-12 months.

    Mix of full-time and part-time option: The Personal Trainer modules can be completed within 4 weeks if you already hold a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification, 5 if you don’t. The additional modules can be completed part-time and take between 3-6 months.

  • What do you need to study the Specialist Personal Trainer Diploma?

    To study the course, you will need to hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing. However, if you don’t have one, this can be incorporated at the beginning of your Specialist Personal training Diploma.

    You must also be aged 16 or over.
