Older Adult Fitness Coach Course

With an increasingly ageing population, exercising with the Older Adult is a rapidly expanding market that provides fantastic opportunities for fitness instructors and personal trainers.

If you are already qualified as a Level 2 Gym, Exercise to Music or Aqua Instructor, or a Level 3 Personal Trainer, this qualification will give you the skills and knowledge to create engaging, exciting, and effective fitness sessions specifically for the over 60s.

This course is also one of the optional modules for the Specialist Personal Trainer.

Course Structure and Content

  • What course materials will I receive?

    You will receive online access to our in depth Older Adult manual via our learning portal. This is designed in house to enhance the learner’s experience. Within this you will also find your student guide and workbook to complete. A hard copy version is also available to buy if you wish.

  • What will I learn on the Older Adult Fitness Coach course?

    This is a fantastic course for all fitness instructors and personal trainers who want to maximise their potential client base. You will acquire an extensive knowledge of how to create effective fitness sessions for older people – based on an understanding of the following topics:

    • The anatomical and physiological principles of the ageing process
    • Age related diseases
    • Disease treatment and management
    • Special considerations that must be taken into account when programming and delivering exercise for independently active, older people
    • The benefits of physical activity and exercise for the ageing population.

    In addition to these points, students will also learn how to:

    • Implement progressive fitness programmes
    • Instruct safe and effective exercise for older people
  • How will I be assessed for my Older Adult qualification?

    You be assessed in a number of ways to ensure you are ready to become an older adult fitness coach including:

    • Home study coursework
    • Case study
  • What are the entry requirements for the Older Adult Fitness Coach course?

    Course participants must hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym, Exercise to Music, or Aqua Instructing).

    Students should also be a minimum of 16 years old.

  • How is the course delivered?

    This is a supported distance learning course which means that you have the flexibility to study at your own pace at home. However, you will have peace of mind that our experienced tutors are here to guide, support and help you to successfully complete your studies.

    Once you enrol you will be contacted by a Focus Training tutor who will explain the course requirements in detail and talk you through your online learning materials. They will then set-up a plan of learning with specific target dates to complete your home-study units, case study and telephone support calls.

    You are required to complete two units of home study and you will have eight weeks to complete and submit a real-life case study based on an adult aged 70 or over.

  • How do I submit my work?

    You will submit your coursework electronically via the Focus Training Learning Portal.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I become an Older Adult Fitness coach?

    Firstly, you will need to hold either a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing Gym, Exercise to Music or Water Based Exercise, or a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification.

    Secondly, you need to make sure you enrol on a fully recognised qualification. Our Older Adult qualification is awarded by Active IQ and is also recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals and will award you with 16 REPs points on completion.

  • What is the Older Adult Certification called?

    On completion of this course you will receive an Active IQ Level 3 Award In Designing Exercise Programmes for Older Adults.

  • How can I pay for the Older Adult course?

  • How long will it take to complete the course?

    As this course is distance learning it will be up to you to set the pace, however, as a guide, we would expect most of our students to complete the course within 6-10 weeks.
