Lower Back Pain Specialist

During their lives, approximately 80% of adults will suffer lower back pain.

Acute back pain can make daily life difficult and the symptoms of chronic back pain can be severely debilitating. Sufferers often become inactive to avoid pain leading to further related conditions.

With this in mind, there is a lucrative and very rewarding market waiting for fitness professionals looking to become a Level 4 instructor and working with this large client group.

The Low Back Pain course will teach you how to assess a client’s current issues, such as postural, range of movement, muscle imbalances, psychological barriers, then plan and deliver safe and effective exercise rehabilitation to reduce pain and improve quality of life.

Course Structure and Content

  • What course materials will I receive for the Level 4 Low Back Pain course?

    You will receive a manual and workbook to support you with your learning.

  • What will I learn on the Level 4 Low Back Pain Specialist course?

    The course will allow instructors, who already hold a Level 3 qualification in Exercise Referral, to take their qualification to the next level. It will provide them with theoretical knowledge and practical skills so that they can effectively plan and oversee fitness programmes for those who suffer from lower back pain. The units you will study include:

    • Human anatomy, and biomechanics of the spine and lower back.
    • Prevalence of low back pain in the UK
    • National guidelines for management of low back pain
    • Activity/inactivity in the prevention and management of low back pain
    • Epidemiology of low back pain
    • Co-morbidities/ medications and their exercise considerations
    • Psychological/ sociological impact of low back pain
    • Screening/ assessment techniques for low back pain
    • Goal setting
    • Planning/ delivering appropriate exercise sessions

    Each of these units will provide you with the required skill sets in order to plan and deliver effective exercise regimes for those with lower back pain.

  • How is the Level 4 Low Back Pain course delivered?

    Once enrolled onto our Low Back Pain course, you will plan your study with one of our tutors, ensuring adequate time and preparation for your practical course days. Dates will be agreed for coursework deadlines and telephone appointments will be made to allow tutors to give you regular feedback on the work that you submit.

    You will complete your home study coursework prior to attending a 2-day practical and theoretical course delivery followed by a period of 8 weeks to complete a case study prior to returning for a 1-day practical assessment.

  • How will I be assessed on the Level 4 Low Back Pain course?

    Throughout the course, you will be assessed on the following:

  • How do I submit my Low Back Pain work?

    You can submit your assignments via post handwritten or electronically via e-mail.

  • How do I become a Level 4 Low Back Pain specialist?

    Before enrolling onto this course, you need a recognised level 3 Exercise Referral qualification. If you don’t have this, don’t worry, we can combine the two courses by doing the Specialist Practitioner course. Once Exercise Referral qualified, you are ready to enrol onto our Level 4 Low Back Pain course and start learning a whole new set of skills and knowledge!

  • Is the Level 4 Low Back Pain course recognised?

    Yes! This qualification is quality assured and awarded by Active IQ, the leading awarding organisation in the Active Leisure sector, who make sure we are delivering and assessing to the highest standards possible, something that we take pride in.

    The course is also recognised by the REPs (Register of Exercise Professionals), and will give you access at Level 4 with 20 REPs points

    To qualify for the course, you must hold a Level 3 qualification in Exercise Referral.

  • How long will it take me to complete the course?

    From start to finish it is possible to complete this qualification in a minimum of 8-10 weeks depending on time that you have available to study and your previous experience. Most learners take between 3-6 months.
