Frequently asked questions on our gym instructor courses

What qualifications do I need to be a gym instructor?

Always choose a gym instructor course that leads to an awarding body qualification specifically in the area of health and fitness-related qualifications that are government approved.

Focus Training use YMCA Awards and Active IQ as their awarding bodies as they offer a full range of gym instructor courses qualifications to enable progressive learning and career development. All our gym instructor qualifications have industry-wide respect amongst employers and gym instructor professionals.

What level of gym instructor course do I need?

We deliver three levels of qualification in the health and fitness industry.

Level 2 Fitness Instructor Course – This is the course needed for entry into employment in the health and fitness industry. The two main Level 2 courses are Gym and Exercise to Music. Other disciplines include Aqua, Step, Circuits, Studio Cycling and Instructing Health Related Exercise to Children. It is the equivalent of GCSE Grades A-C, (4-9) or an NVQ Level 2

Level 3 Advanced Fitness Instructor – The Personal Trainer Diploma is a level 3 qualification, it is at an equivalent level to A levels or an NVQ Level 3.

Level 4 Specialist – The most advanced qualification available. Students must have completed the GP Exercise Referral course to be eligible to enrol.

Are the fitness instructor courses industry recognised?

All Focus Training fitness instructor courses qualifications give full entry to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) and our series of PURE workshops give Continuing Professional Development points to qualified instructors.

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) was set up by the industry to regulate gym and fitness instructors by recognising qualifications allowing entry to the register at different levels. It allows employers to check that any potential employee has the required gym instructor course qualifications for employment in the industry. All fitness instructor professionals on the REPs must complete more fitness and gym training to maintain their status on the register by gaining continuing professional development (CPD) points. This ensures that their knowledge is valid and current.

Can I start a gym instructor course straight-away and how long will it take?

Most of our fitness instructor courses and gym instructor courses require a period of tutor-supported home study before you attend workshops and/or a practical assessment day at one of our venues. If a gym or fitness course is listed on our website at a venue near you then you can be assured that there will still be enough time for you to complete the necessary home study.

If you can’t find the fitness instructor course or gym instructor course that you are looking for, please call our course advisors and they will be able to suggest alternatives and register your interest for upcoming courses so that you don’t miss out.

The time it takes to complete a course depends on a number of factors, for example, your previous knowledge, experience and the particular course on which you are enrolled. However, all our courses can be completed between 4 weeks and 6 months.
