Gym Instructor Course

Our Level 2 Gym Instructor course is where your fitness career begins. This qualification is nationally accredited and equips you with the skills and knowledge required to work with gym members to help them achieve their health and fitness related goals.

If you are just starting out and want to get on the career ladder as quickly as possible our Level 2 Gym Instructor Fast Track course could be ideal for you. Currently available in London and Manchester, this 5-day course will enable you to complete your qualification in the shortest of timescales without compromising on quality.

You will learn how to plan safe and effective gym based exercise sessions, demonstrate how to use a range of cardiovascular and resistance machines, free weights and body weight exercises.

If you are looking to become a Personal Trainer, the Gym Instructor course is the entry requirement, this is where it all starts.

Course Structure and Content

  • What course materials will I receive?

    You’ll be able to access all the Gym Instructor learning materials in our ‘virtual classroom’, a unique online learning portal which guides you, section by section, through your course. All the facts and information you require are clearly presented to make learning as easy and enjoyable as possible, there’s even a quiz at the end of each section to test yourself.  You’ll also receive a hard copy of the course manual.

  • What will I learn on my Gym Instructor course?

    This is an introductory Gym instructor course that gives beginners the skills and knowledge to provide effective fitness training. Your tutor will help you plan and deliver your own gym sessions, using up-to-date methods of programming and instructing skills.

    The nature of this course is that participants will acquire an in-depth knowledge of health and fitness – including first-hand experience of using gym equipment, as well as:

    • How to warm up / cool down
    • Anatomy and physiology
    • Free weight exercising techniques
    • Cardiovascular conditioning
    • Resistance machine exercise techniques
    • Body weight training
    • Flexibility training
    • Principles of exercise programme design
    • Communication and teaching skills
    • Screening and risk factor identification
    • Promoting physical activity for a healthier lifestyle
    • Healthy pregnancy
    • Healthy older adult
    • Fitness for children 14+
    • Customer care – the do’s and dont’s
    • Health and safety in the workplace

    Using this qualification, participants will begin an exciting career in the gym sector – whether that’s as a personal trainer, fitness advisor, or in a supervisory role.

  • How is the Level 2 Gym Instructor Course delivered?

    Following booking, we will arrange an ‘initial contact’ call with your expert support tutor, who will help you plan your study, ensuring adequate time and preparation for your practical course days. Dates will be agreed for coursework deadlines and telephone appointments will be made to allow tutors to give you regular feedback on the work that you submit and run through some revision questions to prepare and support you with the theoretical elements of the course (part-time option only).

    Attendance at one of our UK wide training centres will follow on from the home study element, this involves a mix of practical workshops and theory re-cap sessions to prepare you for your assessments. The courses are led by highly experienced and qualified tutors, whose primary focus is to support and guide you through the qualification.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Overall, the course assessment will consist of three different stages:

    • 2 x multiple-choice theory examinations
    • Home study work that can be completed online, or written
    • Practical assessment – planning, teaching, evaluating a safe and effective exercise session

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I become a Gym Instructor?

    Whether you want to gain experience on the gym floor as a fitness instructor, or you have career aspirations in becoming a fully qualified Personal Trainer, you need to make sure the course you are enrolling onto allows you to gain certification from an Ofqual approved Awarding Organisation. Our Level 2 Gym Instructor course is awarded by Active IQ, who lead the way in awarding qualifications within the Active Leisure sector.

  • What are the course requirements for the Gym Instructor Course?

    The only official requirement to enrol on a Level 2 Gym Instructor course is that students are over the age of 16.

  • On completion of my Gym Instructor course, what will I receive?

    On completion of the Gym Instructor course you will receive an Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-Based Exercise)

  • Is this Gym Instructor qualification recognised by REPs?

    Yes, this course is recognised by REPs, and on completion, you can gain entry onto the register with 20 REPs points. REPs stands for the Register of Exercise Professionals, which regulates fitness professionals operating within the industry to ensure that they meet agreed National Occupational Standards.

  • What payment options are available?

    If you combine this course with the Level 3 Personal Trainer course, you may be eligible for the 19+ Learner Loan. To check eligibility and for more information on learner loans, please call our course advisors on 0800 999 6664.

    Other options include paying in full, which means you will receive a discount on the total price, or paying a small deposit and the rest by interest free, monthly instalments.

  • How long will it take me to complete the Gym Instructor course?

    Part-time learning option: From start to finish it is possible to complete the course in 8 weeks, depending on previous experience and knowledge and available study time. This involves a combination of home study and 3 days attendance.

    Full-time learning option: This is a 5 day intensive course completed in one week.
