British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
