career change

Case Study - Claire Robinson

Tell us a little bit about what you were doing before taking our course. Were you employed in the fitness industry already or did you come to us from a completely different background?

Before I enrolled onto any courses with Focus Training, my main job was caring for children with life limiting conditions.

At the time I was attending a Bootcamp local to me and fell in love with how fitness made me feel. I had never been a huge fan of exercise and especially the gym, mainly because I didn’t really know what to do or how to use the equipment. Over the years I gained some knowledge and enjoyed working alongside others during classes.

What was it that made you decide to take one of our courses?

I then decided to do my level 2 gym instructor course and level 3 PT. I didn’t really have a huge amount of knowledge and didn’t know what my plans where for the future. I just knew I wanted to take another direction in my career and wanted to understand more about fitness and health. Hopefully, in time, I would work towards building my own business and becoming self-employed.

Once I completed the Gym and Personal Trainer course, I was able to start doing mobile PT sessions with a mix of male and female clients. I kept learning and gained more confidence. I helped lead some bootcamp classes putting together my own workouts and adapting them where needed, I then ran my own bootcamp class on a weekly basis.

Once the course was completed what have you used your new skills for? How has it impacted your life/employment?

I wanted to keep learning, so I enrolled onto the Fitness Professional Toolkit course to get more ideas and to continue to build up my business and clientele. Not long after I wanted to specialise in an area of fitness, so I began to attend Pilates classes and realised how beneficial it is for the body and how it compliments other areas of fitness training. I then went ahead and completed the Pilates course with Focus which I must say was my favourite course. I enjoyed all of it and I have loved every part of building up and personalising my own Pilates classes.

Alongside this I’m doing my pre and post-natal qualification with Focus Training, so I can offer more tailored assistance to specific clients in a safe way.

What are your future plans? Will you take any further courses? Do you have a business idea?

Since gaining many qualifications with Focus I’ve never looked back. I am now self-employed alongside my full-time job so I can work around my shifts still doing what I love. I offer PT sessions, small group session bootcamps once a week. I also run my own Pilates classes twice a week and a boxercise class one a week. I never in a million years thought that I would work self-employed or even in the fitness industry, but it’s been one of the best learning experiences ever!

It was slow and steady for me due to working full-time but I’m super excited to see what the future holds and I can’t wait to learn more and gain more qualifications through Focus Training.

If you had a piece of advice for a learner trying to decide whether they should take one of our courses what would it be?

I can’t thank Focus Training enough. All the tutors have been amazing. Nothing is too much trouble and they make learning enjoyable. The support they offer is amazing. If you’re thinking of taking a course and you’re still unsure my best advice is; phone up the team. Talk to them. Ask them to break it down and talk you through what the courses entail and what you will be able to do after you qualify. Give yourself time and don’t rush through your learning. Set realistic goals and deadlines.

I’ve done 4 courses now with Focus Training alongside working full time night shifts.

I started with no background experience and I haven’t looked back. For the first time ever, I actually enjoyed learning. Remember you’re never on your own and there’s always someone there to offer you help, support and guidance if you need it.
