Tell us a little bit about what you were doing before taking our course. Were you employed in the fitness industry already or did you come to us from a completely different background?

Before I took your course, I was running my Carpentry Company (Teknobois Limited). I ran the company for ten years in southern France, hence the French name, and for a number of years here in the UK- sandwiched either side of my time in France- 32 years altogether…! In the UK I traded as “Ribble Valley Carpenters”.

I have run a personal training business as a side-line for over 25 years. I build a “garage gym” everywhere I live, and run my business from there. The business is currently called “Bootneck Body” https://www.bootneckbody.co.uk/ but I may change this to something more personal depending on commercial feedback.

I have spent more-or-less my whole working life running my own affairs. The only time I’ve been “employed” was by Her Majesty during 5 years as a Royal Marine Commando.

What was it that made you decide to take one of our courses?

I first took a Focus course about 25 years ago, so I looked you up again this time around when I decided to re-qualify.

The reason for taking my recent course with you was a bit of a life re-assessment and re-build. I got whacked by an SAH (a severe brain haemorrhage/stroke) in October 2018 right out of nowhere. I decided quickly to re-focus on physical culture for two reasons 1). to stay active and motivated/interested during my recovery and 2). To have something to turn to if going back to the stresses of running a construction business wasn’t a wise choice.

Although you were local, that wouldn’t have been enough- I did some thorough homework and decided that Focus Training looked a solid option.

Once the course was completed what have you used your new skills for? How has it impacted your life/employment?

I was working on my business during my course- I have the advantage of training clients on-and-off during the last 25 years so it wasn’t a new concept. The course allowed me to brush-up on my skills and knowledge and to re-define/refine my business plan. I’m still working on it- my business experience tells me that I will always be working on it! I will need to wait a year or so before I can give you a meaningful life/employment impact assessment. Now I am training people 1.2.1, writing blogs/articles, continuing to study and working hard at identifying opportunities for the future.

What are your future plans? Will you take any further courses? Do you have a business idea?

I have taken two further courses, but these are targeted at teaching and marketing techniques I can apply to help the business rather than PT skills.

If you had a piece of advice for a learner trying to decide whether they should take one of our courses what would it be?

Make sure you really nail the basics and lay a solid foundation to build from- and never stop building! Focus Training is certainly a good place to start… and continue… to train.

In any work that you do, treat clients and co-workers respectfully, develop personality and people-skills- you will absolutely need to sell yourself as a PT.

You will need to develop a complete package (you!)- all the knowledge in the world counts for nothing if you come across as unprofessional- and you won’t get the chance to develop through experience if clients don’t stick- and recommend you…!
