Britain is going on a diet. From March this year, public health officials will impose new calorie caps on fast food and ready meals across the UK. It seems we’re cracking down in the fight against obesity.
Meals at fast-food restaurants and supermarket ready meals are to be cut to a maximum of 600 calories in new guidelines from Public Health England (PHE).
Breakfast portions will be cut to 400 calories as the government aims to prevent overeating and combat high obesity rates.
High-calorie convenience foods are a fond favourite of those with hectic lifestyles, though often encourage over-consumption. A study published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organisation found that obesity rates have rapidly risen as food has become more rapidly available and even more calorific.
That saintly looking pasta you picked up on the way home can contain up to 1200 calories in one serving. And a humble sandwich you’re nibbling on for lunch can sometimes contain more calories than a cheeseburger.
New guidelines published last month recommended no more than 1,600 calories a day, which includes two snacks of 100 calories each.
The measures have been described by the National Obesity Forum as a ‘panic measure to get the public to understand they are eating too much.’
63% of adults in England are heavier than is healthy. 36% are classed as overweight and 27% are obese.
Weight gain is a risk factor for a whole host of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers, with the obese shaving up to 8 years off their lives from these illnesses. Obesity and diabetes already cost the UK over £5 billion every year which is likely to rise to £50 billion in the next 36 years.
