What's Hot For 2016? | Fitness Trends For The Year Ahead

2015 has not only seen a rise in personal training, but also the evolution of cutting-edge fitness technology. Wearable fitness trackers have accessorised the wrists of fitness enthusiasts across the globe, smartphones have begun to act as our own personal fitness coaches and the future of fitness gadgets shows no bounds. As The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) announces its annual fitness trend forecast for the year ahead, exercise pros say wearable technology will be the number one trend in fitness in 2016. The survey results reveal that wearable tech overtook activities such as bodyweight training (number one in 2015) and HIIT (number 1 in 2014) to claim the top spot. Over 2,800 health and fitness professionals worldwide were given 40 potential trends as choices. Here's what they considered to be the top ten trends in the world of fitness for 2016... 1. Wearable technology. Fitness technology will continue to boom in the New Year. From smartwatches to heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices, it's no longer as simple as counting how many steps we make per day. New technology will provide more and more accurate metrics of our performance, body fat levels, calorie intake and even motivate us to push ourselves that bit harder. 2. Bodyweight training. Bodyweight training has increased in popularity thanks to the convenience of working out anywhere, at any time and without the need for much more than a set of ankle weights to add a little challenge. 3. HIIT. Perfect for fitness fans with huge passion yet little time to spare. HIIT can be enjoyed in the morning before work, during your lunch break, or even whilst you wait for dinner to cook! Short bursts of intense activity get the heart pumping way more effectively than a long, drawn-out workout. Fast, focussed and fun! 4. Strength training. If you want to build muscle, torch body fat and protect your muscle mass, strength training is for you. Worked into any exercise regime, strength training has become a popular all-rounder for fitness fans of any age. 5. Fitness Education This year saw the rise of the personal trainer slash celebrity, emphasizing the importance of national fitness certifications and credentials more than ever. More and more health clubs are becoming stricter about the qualifications of the fitness professionals they hire. With good reason too... a high-quality personal training qualification gives you the knowledge and skills required to work with clients safely and effectively. It's not what you know... it's how well you know it! 6. Personal training. Whether you're a gym newbie looking for a little guidance on getting started, or a budding athlete aiming for bigger fitness goals, personal trainers continue to be one of the best investments for those that want to get the very best out of their time in the gym. 7. Functional fitness. Functional fitness focuses on workouts that mimic and support the activities of daily life. Bending down, taking the stairs, stretching up high, pulling doors open... all things we've already got down, but that we can use to improve our strength and agility. 8. Fitness for older adults. Studies show that after 40, we begin to lose muscle mass and strength, so fitness programs that keep older adults healthy and active are crucial to a longer, healthier and more enjoyable life. We're happy to see that health and fitness professionals will continue to focus on creating age-appropriate and safe workout programs for older adults in 2016. (Have you hit the health abyss?) 9. Nutrition for weight loss. Whilst exercise plays a crucial part in the battle against weight loss, nutrition continues to be a huge focus for those tackling obesity and weight-related issues. Not necessarily a trend, though a positive to see that we're thinking more carefully about what we're putting in our bodies! 10. Yoga. With new iterations like fat yoga and salty yoga popping up, yoga is still just as popular as it was a few years back. From challenging Power Yoga to Yogalates, Bikram, Ashtanga, Anusara, Kundalini and Sivananda, we're still loving our yoga fix for the year ahead.
