Running For Older Adult Clients Helps to Reduce the Signs of Ageing

When it comes to Personal Training, a lot of qualified professionals find older adults coming to them to keep fit for a number of reasons. One growing reason that older adults keep fit is to help them stay mobile, but a lot of older people also keep fit to help combat signs of ageing. When older adult clients come asking for help keeping fit and reducing the signs of ageing, Personal Trainers can now offer more effective help as more research comes to light. A recent study by the European Heart Journal by researchers from Leipzig University in Germany looked at the impact that certain exercises have on the strength of white blood cells; the main factor when it comes to ageing. The study looked at HIIT, endurance, and resistance training. During the study, 266 "previously inactive" volunteers were assigned one of the forms of exercise. Each participant carried out their form of exercise three times a week over a six month period, with analysis being carried out halfway through and at the end of the 6-month study. The researchers chose to do this as it allowed them to get a valid and reliable insight into how long each form of exercise took to begin making an impact. When analysing the study and drawing their conclusion, the researchers found that HIIT & endurance training had a greater impact on the telomerase activity and telomere length in the white blood cells. When put into simpler terms, the effects of the exercises are clearly huge, as Telomeres are strands of DNA that affect the way that humans age. Although the research gives Personal Trainers a solid path to follow to help their clients get results, it is not a sign to drop previous training and progression plans. Personal Trainers who want to incorporate HIIT or endurance training into their older adult clients' training need to do so alongside the current training and plans that are in place, as they should already be tailored to your clients' needs, goals and what they enjoy doing. Making sure that your assessment of your older adult clients is essential to nurturing them well throughout their progression, as it allows you to get a solid insight into the client's motivations, what exercises they enjoy and any current health problems they may have. All of this is essential, as it gives you the guidance you need to get the most out of older adult clients without pushing them too far. Overall, the study opens up doors for Personal Trainers looking to make a massive impact on their clients' wellbeing and confidence, as they now have more direction for their training, with there now being reliable research to turn to.
