Turning Your Goals into Reality, Part Two

In Part One I shared my top tips for setting a great goal. I hope you’ve invested the time to come up with a great goal for yourself; one that you feel motivated and compelled to achieve. Now I’m going to give you 7 further tips for turning your goal into reality. Writing your goal is just the first step. It’s an essential step because without a very clear goal you won’t know what needs to be done. But at this stage your goal is essentially still just a dream. So what do you need to do to increase your chances of success; to turn your goal into reality? Tip #1 Focus In life you get what you focus on so focus on what you want – focus on your goal. Read it daily. Place your written goal somewhere you can read it everyday. This will keep your goal alive. Out of sight is out of mind and it’s too easy to get distracted. When you’re focused and familiar with your goal, you are able to spot opportunities, make choices and take actions which move you ever closer towards achieving it. Tip # 2 Create leverage This is essential. If you have set a big, challenging and inspiring goal, then it’s likely that it will demand a lot of you. It might require you to do things differently, break old habits and move beyond your comfort zone. For this reason you need to create sufficient leverage to get you started and to keep you going. How do you create leverage? You need to find as much motivation and desire to move away from your current situation and move towards your goal. This means associating pleasure with your goal by clearly identifying as many good reasons to achieve it as possible. It also means associating your current situation with pain. Identify the painful problems you have right now caused by your current situation. Consider why you must start working on your goal right now/ today and what the painful consequences will be in the future if you don’t. Tip # 3 Create a Plan Having written your big goal it is common to feel a little overwhelmed because you aren’t sure exactly how you can achieve it. You don’t know where or how to start. The key is to break your goal down into key stages or milestones so you get a better sense of the journey ahead. With a detailed plan you can let go of the bigger goal a little and focus your attention on the weeks ahead and the first milestone, in the knowledge that the actions you’re taking will lead you towards success. Tip # 4 Reward Your Progress People have a tendency to be hard on themselves – to focus on the failures, on what went wrong. This isn’t helpful. It doesn’t make you feel good and you don’t do your best work in this state. Instead, focus on what went well and celebrate your successes. Don’t let a little set-back knock you off course. Achieving a goal is a process; a journey, and it’s important that you have fun along the way. Tip # 5 Be Flexible Successful people choose pleasing results over pleasing methods. Be prepared to try new strategies and methods even if they feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable. By staying focused on the results you want (the goal) and on what those results mean to you (the leverage) you are more likely to be prepared to find the right strategy and follow it through, even it means stepping out of your comfort zone. Tip # 6 Build Your Team Whilst your goal is your responsibility and it’s up to you to make it happen, this doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. In fact, successful people will gladly list the people who helped them along the way and contributed to their success. Think about what you need and who could help you in some way. Where can you get ideas and strategies? Who out there has done what you want to do? Where might you need support and where can you get it? Who specialises in helping people like you? All of these tips, if applied, will make a difference in turning your goals into reality but there is one more that needs to be applied because without doing this, the rest are redundant. Top Tip # 7 Take Action The only way to ultimately achieve your goals is to take action. The first step after writing your goal is to create momentum, and you do that by taking some positive action. And then you do it again and again. Nothing happens unless you do something. It’s one skill to be able to work out what the very next little step or action needs to be. It’s another skill to then act on it but it’s only when you master that skill that you can make progress and start moving towards your goal.
