The Post-Gym Binge... 50% Of Us Are Doing It!

We all look forward to rustling up a great post-workout snack. However according to a new study, more than half of Brits reward themselves with cake, chocolate or alcohol after a trip to the gym! The study of 2,000 adults, by New York Bakery Co found that a whopping 51 per cent reach for a sugary snack or cheeky tipple after hitting the gym. Why? Because they feel they've 'earned it'. A bar of chocolate was found to be the most popular post-gym treat, followed by a glass of wine, a slice of cake and a then biscuits... Top 10 Post Gym Treats... 1. A bar of chocolate 2. A glass of wine 3. Cake 4. Biscuits 5. A packet of crisps 6. A takeaway 7. A pint of beer 8. Sweets 9. An unhealthy meal 10. Ice-cream Sure, we all deserve a treat every now and again! The problem, however, is that by gorging on unhealthy snacks post-workout, all of that hard work maintaining that healthy lifestyle is being instantly wiped out. Even more shocking, is that 80 per cent admitted that they often end up eating more calories from their 'reward' than they just burned off. As a nation, adults are exercising well below the recommended amount (11 hours per month). The majority only manage to rack up four hours every month, split into sessions of around 40 minutes each time. When asked about their tendency to reach for the biscuit tin after a workout, almost half said they see the calories they've just burned during exercise, as extra food and drink they can then consume later on. Many use this technique by heading to the gym before a big night out, to burn off in advance, some of the calories they know they'll eat later. Thirty-eight per cent also exercise so they can enjoy a more unhealthy diet than they would otherwise. As the saying goes, 'You Are What You Eat'. Many people seem to be hitting the gym purely to burn off the calories needed to allow them to eat more. And when they do eat, they opt for the sugary and fattening, as opposed to the nutritious. This contradictory cycle not only hinders weight loss, but deprives the body of the stuff it needs to function to it's maximum capacity. It's not surprising that tiredness, poor concentration and a seriously 'hangry' appetite affect many of these post-gym bingers!
