The Gift of Gluttony | Excessive Easter Eats

The long weekend is creeping up, and we're dreaming of extra time in the great outdoors, long lie ins and a few Easter treats! Who doesn't enjoy cracking open a chocolate egg over the bank holiday? Though it seems our little chocolate delights are growing out of proportion. Some of the Easter eggs on the shelves this year contain almost a whopping 3000 calories. And considering once we crack that bad boy open, we're unlikely to stop, we're getting an extreme amount of sugar and fat over the long weekend. According to Wren Kitchens, the average child receives thirteen Easter eggs. Those kids that will be a little light on physical activity this weekend will be taking in a worryingly high amount of fats and sugars. The Biggest Offender The Cadbury Chopped Nut Egg contains 2,977 calories, and contains 180g of fat, and 285g of sugar. This indulgent treat contains seven times more fat than a Big Mac. The Most Saintly The best Easter treat is the Malteaser Bunny, with a modest 156 calories, making it a sensible option for children, without the extravagance of calorie-crammed eggs. Creme eggs have a lower fat content than the Malteaser bunny, though almost double the sugar. In other terms of Easter eats, a hot cross bun is worth around 280 calories, and one bag of Mini Eggs comes in at 445 calories. Fine for a little treat, though many children will be enjoying the whole bag, plus many chocolate eggs, on top of their usual intake over the Easter weekend. Whilst schools play a key part in guiding children towards healthy eating choices and encouraging activity, when the kids are off for the holidays, good practice can go quickly astray. Many children will spend the Easter break indoors, in front of a screen rather than playing outside and enjoying sporting activities. The rates of physical activity for kids have dropped drastically in the past two years.
