Superfoods for your shopping list!

Last year we put together a list of ‘superfoods’ that should be in your shopping trolley each week. By now I’m sure your bored of them so here’s a few more. Only 5 this time, but will offer some variety. Avocados Proven to be a super fruit that lowers bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol – therefore reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. It will also help protect your prostate and as it contains high levels of lutein will also be good for the eyes. Puree for guacamole, slice into salads or just eat on its own for a quick snack. Quinoa A high protein seed that contains all essential amino acids – making it an unusually complete protein source. It is a useful alternative to rice as it sits in the low end of the GI chart. It is also gluten free and easy to digest. If buying completely raw it will need soaking for a few hours first – so maybe better to buy pre soaked stuff for ease of use. Beans (kidney beans, soybeans, chickpeas etc) A superfruit containing soluble fibre, high levels of vitamin B, calcium and amino acids. People who eat beans typically display lower rates of heart disease and certain types of cancer. Canned beans are good to keep handy and can be added to almost any food. Greek Yoghurt Greek yoghurt generally has a higher level of protein than normal yoghurt, whilst generally containing lower carb and fat content. Most strained versions will resist heat better, so you can cook with it whilst maintaining its nutritional content. Alternatively eat it plain or mix it with your protein shakes for a thicker creamier taste. Cabbage Cabbage can be eaten raw or thrown into stir frys. Any bad smell associated with cabbage will probably mean its overcooked. Its high in phytochemicals meaning it will help to prevent cancer contains high levels of antioxidants to help prevent heart disease and is also a natural source of glutamine. It's also a great source of fibre so will fill you up with minimal calorie intake. Next month – another 5 superfoods. Of course, to start a career in fitness you require solid qualifications.
