National Fitness Day Goes Back To School

National Fitness Day takes place on 9th September, and this year's focus is on the little people. Organisers UKActive has for the first time, concentrated on including schools in the largest celebration of fitness in the UK. Fitness fans (and phobes!) in their thousands are expected to don their exercise gear and head to gyms, health clubs, and parks throughout the country, to have a go at the free ‘Power Half Hour’ exercise events on offer. Last year, almost 2,000 venues opened their doors to run free exercise sessions, reaching 27 million people... a number UKActive is keen to beat this year! A strong focus for this year's National Fitness Day will be school children. Working closely with the education sector, organisers hope to educate teachers, parents, mentors and children, on the benefits of exercise in school. Primary schools across the UK have already pledged to do their bit, by running activities designed to get their children more active. Obesity amongst children is on the rise, partly a result of the increase in sedentary lifestyles and the popularity of whiling away the hours indoors on the Xbox rather than out in the sunshine! Studies report that obesity among children aged 6 to 11 has more than doubled in the past 20 years, and today, 17 % of kids are considered overweight. Not only are overweight kids prone to taunts and bullying in the playground, but they’re also at a higher risk of developing health complications in later life. Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and high cholesterol are common concerns for overweight and inactive children when they grow up. Add to this that active kids sleep better, eat better, have stronger bones, and tend to feel generally better about themselves, it's surprising to see that so many young people are still in the fitness failure zone. This National Fitness Day, the Focus team will be doing our bit to support the fitness fest, with a little help from our own Kids Fitness Instructors! We'll be educating fitness fans on how to devise creative and engaging ways to get the little people moving...
