Meet a Student - See How Chris Uses Our Courses to Further His Career

When people book on our courses, they do it for various reasons; from filling spare time to starting a new career. When people decide to pursue a course, we always ask what motivated them to do so, and we love it when we know they are going to be putting their skills into practice, whether that be within their career or their general daily lives. Chris, who has done his Level 2, Level 3 and Exercise Referral qualifications with us; is a prime example of the variety of ways that people put their skills into action. We spoke to Chris to see what his time studying with us was like, and to see how he is using his training. Hi Chris, thanks for your time. So, between the 3 courses you have done with us, what has your experience been like? All three of the courses were really enjoyable, and that makes learning so much easier, because I didn't feel forced to study when I didn't have time, and I knew that I could make up the time whenever I could. The mix of training works really well too because there isn't too much practical or theory work, the mix is bang on. The fact that the practical sessions always followed the relevant theory sessions helped because it let me put things into practice when they were fresh in my head. The coursework part of the course was set out really well as well. The fact that there is coursework makes sure that you know everything, but with the course days and tutor support, it didn't feel overwhelming and was actually not stressful at all. You mentioned the tutor support. What do you think of the support that is on offer throughout the courses? My tutor, Lee, was great. It really helped that I could strike up a conversation with Lee and build a bit of a relationship over the calls, and this again helped when I needed to clear something up or if anything got a bit tough, because Lee knew what worked for me, so he could help to put it in a way that was more understandable. In fact, when it came to be going for my first job in fitness, Lee even helped with that. I was applying for a job at Total Fitness as a Gym Instructor, and Lee previously worked there before Focus, so he knew what I needed to be able to get the role and do well What did you think of the learner resources and student portal that are on offer on the courses? Just like the Tutor calls and support, the resources were really helpful. I used the manuals the most, but that's down to me just preferring reading when I am learning. The manuals were useful because it gives you the chance to make quick notes whenever you can, which I found easier than having to go online. I didn't really use the videos, to be honest, but that's just me. I can see why people find them useful and they could be useful if I needed to second check anything, but the manuals were more than enough. So, you said you're a Gym Instructor. Is that what you're still doing now? Yeah, but my dream is to get into Physiotherapy, and I am set to help at a local hospital, where I am going to be training in Physiotherapy, as I currently am in college. I am also still currently doing my Sports Massage course with yourselves, so I am going to be applying this in my Physiotherapy work at the hospital. Which course would you say has, or is going to be the most useful? So far, it will definitely be my Level 2 and 3 qualifications, as I wouldn't be a Fitness Instructor now if I didn't have these qualifications. Also, Level 2 helped to set the foundations for doing more qualifications such as Level 3. Although, in the future, I can already tell that Sports Massage is going to be more than useful, as some of my clients from my 1-1 sessions at the gym are already asking me about what involvement I will be able to have when I am qualified. What has motivated you to step into a fitness career? I was made redundant by the same company twice, so as you can imagine I was pretty fed up of the standard job with set monthly wage, so I wanted to do something I enjoyed, which was fitness. I knew that I wanted to get into fitness, but I also knew it wasn't as easy as most people thought, so I looked to start off the right way by getting Active IQ qualifications. I had always liked fitness, but I have never really considered making it a career, but I honestly don't regret it one bit; I now have more control over my career than ever and it's great. As you can see, Chris is a prime example of how diverse the fitness industry is becoming and how industry-recognised qualifications can open up doors for fitness lovers who are looking to make their passion a career.
