Females In Fitness | International Women's Day

Today is International Women's Day, a celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Over the years, we've coached and trained some of the most successful female personal trainers in the UK, and met with some of the most influential women in the business. So, to show our support for the sisterhood, we've highlighted some of the most inspirational women we've met recently, and their stories of success.

Aged 19, shona developed her first taste for teaching, having always enjoyed sports. Her passion for dance led her to dream of a career as an Exercise To Music Instructor, and so she began her fitness career running freelance studio classes around her job in finance.

“After having my little boy it became very apparent that as a Mum, I was very restricted as to what exercise classes I could do where I could take a little one with me . So I set myself up, gained more qualifications with Focus Training, such as my PT Toolkit course and level 3 Pre and Postnatal course and went around houses training small groups of Mums at home.”

DANA HUGGINS Focus Training student Dana Huggins competed in the UK BFF Finals in Nottingham last year. She is, undeniably, in fantastic shape and has worked incredibly hard to achieve outstanding results. However, for Dana this has not always been the case and she wants to use her story to inspire others to adopt more fit and healthy lifestyles. “Taking the first step was daunting. My preconception of the gym was that it was going to be full of muscly men and uber fit women. Once I got through the door I realised that just wasn’t the case. I was soon encouraged by my progress. I lost 3.5 stone in the first 2 years, attending the gym 3 times a week at first. I noticed how much my breathing improved and stepped it up to 4 – 5 times a week. Initially I was totally into cardio training and I went on to lose another 4 stone in a year." DEBBIE RICHARDS Debbie's list of achievements, both sporting and academic, is astonishing. She was one of the first people to be awarded a London Classics medal, completing the first-ever Swim Serpentine 2 mile open water challenge, to add to her London Marathon and Ride London 100 events. SARAH TREMBLE Today, the proud owner of Serendipity Ladies Fitness Centre in Selby, North Yorkshire, Sarah runs an exciting business which she has developed over the past couple of years and plans to expand more in the future. Wind the clock back 10 years and a very different Sarah could not have foreseen what a future in the fitness industry would hold. “I had been working as a travel agent for seven years and was really struggling with my weight and bouts of depression. I visited my doctor and was advised that I needed to make some lifestyle changes to become healthier and so the first thing I did was join a small local gym called Body Bits. This was a turning point. Thanks to the encouragement of the team there, and in particular the gym owner Nigel, I got my weight down from size 18 to size 10." DANIELLE BENSON Danielle has reinvented herself over the past few years. She has completely reset her lifestyle and career and is now loving her job as a self-employed Personal Trainer, inspiring others to make changes for the better. Having managed to shed an incredible 9 stone, almost half her body weight, she was inevitably frequently asked how she did it. The answer is no surprise; it was her commitment to reaching her goals through hard work at the gym. “It was a 10k obstacle course, it was really hard work but I did it. 12 months later I did it again. This time I had entered the Elite wave which is a competitive race. I did the course in just 1 hour 10 minutes.” Feeling inspired?
