The human race has reached it's peak, according to a study which says we've hit our limit for height, lifespan and physical performance.
Researchers have reviewed 120 years worth of historical information, Published in Frontiers in Physiology, looking into the effects of genetic and environmental factors. The results suggest that there could be a maximum limit to our fitness levels and that we've finally hit the top.
The ways that we are adapting our environment – including through global warming – is probably going to pull those limits down and force humanity into a decline, researchers have warned.
The research team say that we've reached a plateau across a number of biological statistics, the effects of which will be seen as less sporting records are broken and more people reach but don't exceed the current highest life expectancy age.
Human height has decreased in the last decade in some African countries, suggesting that some societies are no longer able to provide enough nutrition to maintain the health of their young people.
So, what's next?
Hopefully, these findings will encourage healthcare professionals and fitness experts to focus on strategies that will increase the quality of life and the proportion of the population that can reach these maximum biological limits.
Now that we know the limits of the human species, this might act as a goal for us to ensure we're pushing our bodies to our absolute best.
