Colette came to Focus knowing that she wanted a new career path but wasn't confident going into the fitness industry without reputable training to back her up. Take a look at Colette's story.
When did you first get into fitness?
I have been into fitness for the last 6 years properly. I had set a date for my wedding and decided to lose some weight, that’s when I found a new passion which was the gym!
What did you do before?
Before becoming a PT I was a stay at home Mum and had been for 2 years since giving up my job as an estate agent just after I had my little girl.
Was there a light bulb moment when you decided to train to become a PT?
My husband has his own car business and over Christmas, he was forced out of a very good car pitch. Luckily, we had just purchased a new plot but the stress of setting up very fast made me feel the need to go back to work to ease the pressure.
Luckily, I didn’t rush into anything and gave myself a bit of time to really think about it. I wanted to be happy, I didn’t want to dread going to work and feel the pressures of work as I used to. I wanted to do something for me. I spent a lot of money at a gym locally that offered small group PT and I just loved it so much I mentioned the idea of training up as a PT to some family and friends and their encouragement was what I needed!
What/who inspired you?
I wouldn’t say there was anything or anyone in particular as there aren’t many PTs locally to me to aspire to it was really a big dream I had created and once I had it in my head I couldn’t think of anything else!
Why did you choose Focus/ how did you hear about us?
It was my husband who found Focus! I was so keen and excited to get going I was a little too eager to get something booked and get started! He sat with me one night and he found Focus Training through The Register of Exercise Professionals
(REPS) and thought that a company who is recommended so highly was the best one to go for and he was right!
Yes, I did – I wouldn’t have been able to afford to pay for the course otherwise.
How was the Focus experience? What were the best bits?
Being quite a shy person and considering I have been a stay at home Mum for 2 years, actually taking the call from Focus to book was so nerve-wracking. However, I spoke to Clare who was just so lovely I can’t put into words just how at ease she made me feel! I knew from speaking to her that day that I was going to be well looked after!
I have so many best bits because the group I was in was just the best group of people, funny, witty knowledgeable and above all, every single person was passionate about the fitness industry! We arranged revision groups where we stayed behind a while, we arranged training together in the gym which was so much fun! Learning so many different techniques and ideas that you can’t always learn from reading!
We were always encouraged to get into the gym when we could and that was such a good confidence boost! Our coaches Paul and Hannah became our friends, their professionalism and knowledge were what got me through the course.
What have you gone on to do now, describe your working week?
Well, my feet haven’t touched the floor since I left Manchester that day!!
I decided to open my own gym at home in a room we no longer used. It took a bit of setting up but I had people enquiring about coming to see me straight away so I didn’t have the chance to stop and think! I did an introductory offer for the first 10 people and that was snapped up! Within a month of finishing the course, I had my first clients through the doors of ‘Lett’s PT
Now.. well now I see roughly 6-7 clients a day starting at about 10 am and I usually finish around half 6 in the evening. But every day is different some afternoons become free so I can get my little girl from childcare and spend my day with her!
I don’t work weekends and I only do two late evenings a week but that’s only until 8.15. Because it’s my own business I don’t mind one bit! I love what I do and people are recommending me so much I've had to turn about 15 potential clients away this last week alone! Overall, I'd say I've created my own fitness brand
What’s the best thing about being a PT?
I get to change people’s lives!
I get to make friends with so many people and see them change and grow in a way they could never imagine.
I get to see people achieve their goals.
I get to become part of their lives and make them feel better about themselves!
The best part ... there isn’t one part, in particular, it’s the whole thing! It’s a dream job!
Who are your clients?
My clients range from 25 - 55, the majority are ladies but I do have men now and the number of male enquiries has gone up! I also have my first Post Natal ladies about to start also!
I offer 10 PT sessions and a free introductory session. All sessions are approx an hour-long consisting of some cardio and then weight training.
What’s the best tip you could give to someone thinking of starting out?
If you’re looking into a course - like I did - the seed is already planted and if you don’t go for it now someone else will live the dream you wanted! So go for it you will never look back if fitness is your passion and you want to go down this road then take the leap of faith now. Let your dream spiral out into what will become your business plan and you can make it happen. Of course, research your market, I’m from a small town so going to Manchester was a bit of a shock to my system but adapt and go with it and don’t think that it’s not going to work because you’re not a big gym etc .. you are who you are so don’t lose that passion!!
What are your future plans?
I’ve been looking at renting a unit now so I can start to offer group training sessions. I’ve also just done my Ante and Post Natal course
with focus training so I’d like to hold sessions specifically for new mothers.
