Brits are wasting a whopping £558 million each year on unused gym memberships, with one in ten admitting they haven't actually visited their gym for twelve months.
A poll of 1,000 gym members by Banana Moon Clothing discovered that 11 per cent of members, despite paying an average of £47 a month (or £564 each year) on their membership, they hadn’t actually been to the gym at all in 2016. 21 per cent said they had been in for a workout just three times, meaning that each visit cost them £188. Add to this the cost of the funky new gym kit they planned to wear, plus sports bag, bottles and fitness trackers... and it's an even more costly visit!
So why are we setting out with good intentions but not following them through?
A common excuse for ducking the gym is a lack of time. Busy schedules, family commitments and work mean that there aren't always enough hours in the day. However, as fitness professionals, we can work to enable clients to find the time, with shorter, more targeted exercise programmes that can be maintained outside of the gym.
Many say they have lost motivation (around 80% of New Year's resolutions fail by mid-January
for the same reasons).
Gym users can very quickly ditch their attempts to get fitter when the weight doesn’t start dropping off, or their performance doesn’t improve. Sometimes it can simply be a case of tweaking their technique, but without expert guidance, they become demotivated with their efforts and often ditch their fitness quest altogether. As a qualified Personal Trainer, you’ll be equipped not only to provide expert advice on techniques, diet plans and use of equipment. You’ll be ready to create tailored, personalised fitness plans based on an individuals fitness goals. You’ll coach, monitor
them as the results start to show, and turn gym time into a challenge, rather than a chore. (The Real Role of a Personal Trainer
Many also say that they stopped trying because the gym was too busy to get to use any of the equipment. This is especially true at the beginning of the year when the New Year's resolutions kick in and the gym is suddenly flooded with newcomers. Though, a good Personal Trainer will help clients to develop an exercise regime that doesn't rely on just gym equipment. Meaning no standing around waiting and more time maximising the space on the gym floor.
For us fitness professionals, it's all about understanding our clients' expectations. Knowing what makes them tick and how they are motivated goes a long way to achieving the desired results... and avoiding waste of their hard-earned cash on that gym membership they don't use.
