There are literally hundreds of training courses available for fitness instructors, each one providing students with a certificate on completion. However, don’t assume that they are all the same because unless a qualification comes from a body approved by QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum Authority) it is almost certainly a second rate alternative to the real thing.
Many students are lured by the prospect of acquiring a low cost qualification but this really is false economy. Only people with recognised qualifications will be accepted to enlist on the Register of Exercise Professionals, an essential step in gaining employment and credibility within the industry. Employers, and increasingly individuals, know what to look for when hiring a fitness professional so it pays to choose quality assured qualifications from the outset.
So, what does a government approved awarding body guarantee? Well, it ensures that the same standards of training and assessment are applied nationally, it makes sure that tutors are monitored and kept up to scratch, it means that they undertake rigorous checks, they have the best systems in place to ensure quality control and, should you require it, there are procedures for appeals.
Here at Focus Training we use CYMCA as our awarding body. They are nationally recognised specialists in health and fitness and are respected amongst employers and health professionals. Other approved bodies are OCR, City and Guilds and Active IQ.
Finally, a note of caution. A certificate from one of the above awarding bodies is printed and produced by the awarding body themselves and will never carry the logo of the training provider. If yours does then we advise you contact the awarding body in question to authenticate your certificate.
